Album Review

Tracey Thorn's solo album sounds pretty much like what it is—a transition from the ramshackle Marine Girls to the much more sophisticated Everything but the Girl. A Distant Shore is a low-key affair, simply played on delicate acoustic and electric guitars. The focal point, of course, is Tracey's voice and it is quite lovely as she ambles her way through eight understated originals and apropos covers of the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" and Cole Porter's "Night & Day."

Customer Reviews

25 years on and still awesome!

This collection of songs helped me through some difficult times in the 80's! With it's heartbreaking and mesmerising lyrics, and the pathos so noticeable in her voice... every track made you feel like you weren't the only muddled up person around. Written after a temporary break up with Ben Watt (or so I am led to believe), this album is haunting. Follow it up by purchasing Ben Watt 'North Marine Drive', which in its' own way is as tragic and as beautiful! I dare anyone to listen to the track A DISTANT SHORE and not be moved to tears.

English Rose

Charming lovelorn debut from the young (then) English Literature student at Hull University. Spotted swotting for her finals with Ben Watt by me and Marriot-haired Bangers whilst visiting Hull in '83. Well in our dreams maybe... Haunting, angsty, clever with words as always though the lyrics now sound studenty in places. The plaintive, melancholic vocals and sweet guitar picking make this a classic of its day. Great companion to 'North Marine Drive' by Ben Watt.

Too Happy

I was listening to Shelby Lynne's new song - Pretend - and it reminded me of these beautiful, pared down love songs. As good as anything she ever did, for me.
