iTunes Review

For those who have already fallen under her spell, singer/songwriter Neko Case’s voice is a wonder. So when the fluttering guitar at the beginning of “This Tornado Loves You” ushers in Case’s mellifluous singing on her new release, Middle Cyclone, it’s like a comforting scent from junior high. Her fifth album has widescreen ambition coupled with an intimate-sounding execution. In addition to usual suspects the New Pornographers and Calexico, she also collaborates with everyone from Los Lobos to M. Ward to Garth Hudson (of the Band fame). The easy-swinging “Magpie to the Morning” sounds like a lost folk song once learned at summer camp, while her surprising interpretation of the Sparks’ “Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth” is as fresh and topical as ever. It's the ideal meeting of craft (strong arrangements and orchestrations) and art (Case's singular brand of singing plus inspired instrumental contributions) that made this highly anticipated album ultimately worth the wait.

Amazing

The three year wait for Neko's fifth studio album has been well worth the wait. The soundscapes she conjours are just as lush and deep as those in fox confessor, but the compositions have gone further, largely due to the amazing group of contributing musicians, such as M Ward and members of The New Pornographers, Los Lobos, Calexico, The Sadies, Visqueen, Lilys, and Giant Sand; outstanding! I have listened to this album about ten times now from start to finish and each time new subtlties appear. I can't really name any stand out tracks as I believe there is not a weak track on this album; but if pushed my favourite at the moment is 'I'm an animal'. Neko must be one of the most consistent and ever-improving artists around today, all I can say is wow!

Finally, a new Neko Case Album!

And well worth the wait. 'Fox Confessor' was fantastic and Neko Case continues to excel on this new one. Stand out tracks are the opener, 'This Tornado Loves You', as Neko wreaks havoc across the States in pursuit of a reluctant lover and People Got a Lotta Nerve - in which she eats 'hearts of sharks'. But all the songs showcase one of the most awesome and versatile voices around. Love her!!

A truly amazing album

I don't think I've ever heard such a perfect album...wonderful Neko!
