DJ-Kicks (DJ Mix)

James Holden has had one of the most unexpected trajectories in electronic music: Fresh out of adolescence, he got his start making trance music in the early 2000s, singlehandedly reshaped the minimal scene with his Border Community label, then more or less abandoned club music in favour of experimental fusion and electronic improv. Recorded in 2010, Holden’s DJ-Kicks mix neatly divides the “then” and “now” phases of his career: It’s largely laced by steadily thrumming 4/4 rhythms, yet it’s also psychedelic to the core, awash in spinning arpeggios and surging synths. Following an ambient intro from post-rockers Piano Magic, he dives into a succession of muscular grooves, folding punk-funk stomp and techno pulse into atmospheres reminiscent of Germany’s kosmische music of the ’70s. But with Mogwai’s throbbing “The Sun Smells Too Loud (Holden Remix)”, the set’s orbit gradually grows wider and wobblier, taking in Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid’s laptop-assisted free jazz, Eric Copeland’s colourful shuffle and Lucky Dragons’ minimalist gamelan. It all comes to a head with Holden’s lopsided “Triangle Folds”, exclusive to this set, before slipping sideways into a downright clubby finale of techno and acid. Taken together, the mix is a snapshot of one of electronic music’s most restless thinkers, capturing one eureka moment after another.
