Album Review

In 1998, female Philippine singer Jolina Magdangal released Jolina. Magdangal is also a popular television and film personality, and her name was very recognizable prior to the release of this album, but even at 20 years old (at the time of this album's release), she is a fine singer. There is still room for her voice to mature, but she has much talent. The album is dominated by passionate, easy-listening love songs, a style of music quite popular in the Philippines. Though the pieces are not very challenging, there is an appealing ring to a good portion of the music, made more palatable by Magdangal's poise and assured delivery. Five of the album's 11 songs were first performed by Magdangal for movies in which she starred, including "Sana'y Kapiling Ka" (trans: Hoping to Be with You). Magdangal also performs a version of "Paper Roses," first made popular by Anita Bryant, and then in the 1970s by Marie Osmond. This is the best song on the album. Considering that the music is mostly easy-listening, however, it tends to be a bit boring, but "Laping Tapat" (trans: Always True) has a penetrating melody impassioned by the vocalist's effort. "Kapag Ako'y Nagmahal" (trans: If I Fall in Love) is a standout ballad which she also brings to full life. This song is also made distinctive by the trenchant use of a string section. Magdangal has a fine voice and delivery, though her voice could benefit from some maturing. She could also probably handle more adventurous material if given the chance.
