An Overstuffed Ragbag

The losing star rating I’ve given doesn’t reflect on the brilliant artist, but on the compilation.

Eric is a legend, but his recorded output has had its highs and lows, and the one thing that is is essential in compiling a “best of” collection is a high level of curatorial skill.

In that regard, the earlier (and slightly cheaper, but misnamed) “Complete Clapton” does a much better job - it at least attempts to provide a balanced career overview, and to pick out career-defining performances.

This collection may seem generous in its track count, but there is lot of bland, obscure or indiscriminate material, padded out further with uneven live versions of classic older songs. And there is little sign of logic, either chronological or stylistic, in the running order.
