iTunes Review

A California misfit (born in Chichester) who relocated to New York City to become the drag queen of his dreams, Antony Hegarty has a voice every bit as unique as his life story. His androgyny manifests itself in every note, as his remarkably flexible voice shifts from masculine to feminine with the ease and grace of a ballet dancer. His hero Boy George duets for “You Are My Sister”, Lou Reed adds vocals and guitar to “Fistful of Love" while Rufus Wainwright and Devendra Banhart also make welcome guests. Throughout, Hegarty proves a master of paradox; setting the musical tones with ominous cocktail lounge pianos and funereal stringed instruments alongside an effortless melodic lightness.

More than brilliant …

More than brilliant, it is exceptional, it is inspirational, it is sad, it is happy, it is every single emotion in half an hour.

I instantly fell in love with Antony & the Johnsons (after hearing 'Hope There's Someone') - a haunting masterpiece.

Eight years later, Hegarty relocated to New York City and found a world more accepting of avant-garde sensibilities and a sexually ambiguous nature. An early incarnation was the cabaret ensemble Blacklips, modeled after Blue Velvet-era Isabella Rossellini and the drag queen who graced the cover...
