Album Review

Red Lights Flash are from, of all places, the small city of Graz, Austria, a fact that one would never even guess without looking at the album's liner notes. (Even the spoken word parts of the explosive "Politics of Hate" sound more like a bad Schwarzenegger impersonation than a "real" Austrian accent.) The first European band signed to Anti-Flag's A-F Records, Red Lights Flash basically sound like Anti-Flag Jr: politically-charged straight-up punk rock that's rooted in the sound of the early-'80s Oi! scene but open-ended enough to take in some American hardcore influences as well. The lyrics of songs like "Boost the Economy" and "Words, Context, Warfare" are as didactic as the titles suggest, but there's not much in the way of humorless hectoring here, and the songs are built on tough, speedy street-punk riffs that don't buckle under their rhetorical weight. Free is strictly for political punk fans, but it's a solid American debut for a band with several equally fine European releases to its credit.
