iTunes Review

With his band, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, Alexander Ebert leads a sprawling 10-person ensemble. On this solo effort, however, he goes it completely alone, writing the songs, playing all the instruments, and engineering the recording all by himself. While the album will appeal to Edward Sharpe fans for its breezy melodies and feel-good vibe, this is more eclectic than his work with the band, and it’s an absorbing and often surprising listen. Taking advantage of the creative freedom that comes with making a bedroom recording, he flirts with a host of ideas over the course of these 10 distinct tracks. “In the Twilight”, “A Million Years”, and “Let’s Make a Deal to Not Make a Deal” are jaunty, jangly folk-rock; the playful “Awake My Body” and “Remember Our Heart” best exhibit the experimental attitude permeating things; “Old Friend” and “Glimpses” are spare and moody ballads; and the quirky, soulful “Truth” features an infectious singsong delivery accompanied by whistling, hand claps, and simple yet effective clarinet figures. In following his own restless creativity Ebert has created a warm and charming release that transcends its lack of focus.

One Man Band

Magnificent album. That superb pop sensibility familiar to lovers of Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeros married to some great introspective and quietly powerful songs. Recommended.

Genius

This is a truly remarkable achievement for the front man of Edward Sharpe. A masterpiece and a serious contender for album of the year

Genius Through The Generations

Alex Ebert is truely amazing. Starting with Ima Robot and more recently spanning to Edward Sharpe and now Alexander.
If you enjoy the lyrics and tones of this album, you should really check out Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's, Alex's other band.
After that ... Check out Ima Robot :D

Years Active: '10s

Alex Ebert kept himself busy during the early 21st century, fronting the power pop band Ima Robot for several years before launching a second group, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, in 2007. Named after a messianic figure that Ebert had dreamt up during a period of post-rehab soul-searching, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros grew into an 11-member ensemble whose appearance (bushy beards, Eastern mystic clothing) and sound (folksy pop fused with neo-psychedelia) recalled the free-loving...
