Editors’ Notes

On his 1987 sophomore album release, Travis plays to the strengths of his debut Storms of Life while stretching out in some new directions. You can hear him comfortably settling into his persona as a neo-traditionalist ballad singer. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he had such outstanding material as "Forever and Ever, Amen" to apply his warm baritone to. To his credit, though, he avoids slipping into the bland country-pop mode that many worthy country vocalists have succumbed to. Under producer Kyle Lehning's guidance, he probes the painful edges of love, as in "The Truth Is Lyin' Next To You." He also starts to rock a little, having some fun with the rollicking "What'll You Do About Me?" Always and Forever earned multi-platinum status and brought Travis fame outside of country's confines. Most importantly, it solidified his claim as an artist of passion, integrity and substance.

Customer Reviews

Top-notch country music

Randy Travis alongside the likes of Alan Jackson and George Strait pioneered the "New Country" revolution in the 1980s and early 90s and this album highlights why Randy was/is so highly thought of. His vocal style is instantly recognisable and he plays to his strengths with a lot of "cryin in your beer" tunes like the excellent "Good Intentions" but he does still manage to sound depressed but cheerful at the same time on one of biggest hits, "Forever and Ever, Amen". This album is a great Randy Travis introduction but I think his greatest hits CD is an even better purchase as you will get most of these plus some of his other classics.

Like the Beatles in rock, Randy Travis marks a generational shift in country music. When his Storms of Life came out in 1986, country music was still wallowing in the post-urban cowboy recession, chasing elusive crossover dreams. Travis brought the music back to its basics, sounding like nothing so much as a perfect blend of George Jones and Merle Haggard. He became the dominant male voice in country until the rise of "hat acts" like Garth Brooks and Clint Black, releasing seven consecutive number...
