iTunes Review

Anyone who viewed the VH-1 special about the making of Fleetwood Mac’s classic album Rumours was treated to some keen insights into the music making of Lindsey Buckingham. Besides, his obvious penchant for writing irresistibly catchy melodies, Buckingham was proven an expert technician and arranger who could hear where the music was going long before it got there. This intricate expertise informs everything Buckingham touches and for 2008’s Gift of Screws, he picks up the tempo from his previous, quieter, more introspective disc, 2006’s Under the Skin, and experiments with the guitars and electrifies his pop instincts with the effortless bounce of “Did You Miss Me,” “The Right Place to Fade,” and “Love Runs Deeper.” “Wait for You” channels an unusual blend of sophisticated metropolitan blues that features some of Buckingham’s most spirited guitar playing. “Great Day” and “Time Precious Time” modulate with a new century’s version of psychedelia, filled with subtle quirks and subliminal hooks underneath the simple surfaces.

Sketchbook for the next big Mac?

There are a limited number of artists for whom I actually put release dates in my diary – but Buckingham is one. Gift of Screws does not disappoint. (Under the Skin was my top rated album of 2006.) Look at the cover – the pretty boy has gotten serious. This has the sound of a sketch book crammed with ideas for the next Mac album (oh yes please). It's raw, unrestrained creativity with some simply incredible guitar playing. The songs are bursting with innovation – and will make you want to write yourself. Like Neil Diamond, Brian Wilson, Randy Newman... the Buck is maturing brilliantly.

Gift of Lindsey

Two years after the rather brilliant 'Under The Sun' comes this follow up. If you liked the Lindsey-contributed songs on the Fleetwood Mac albums, you will not be disappointed. This album is more immediate than 'Under...' and comes in at under (a taut) 40 mins, cutting away all the fat and getting straight to the point. 'Great Day' starts proceedings and would not be out of place on, say, 'Tango In the Night' as is 'Love Runs Deeper' another lead track. The mantra-like 'Time Precious Time' is great with all it's layered vocals and fiddly guitars, as is 'Bel Air Rain'. 'Did You Miss Me' is classic Buckingham and the obvious lead single. 'Wait For You' is Lindsey circa-mid 70s and 'The Right Place To Fade' is very reminiscent of 'Second Hand News' off of 'Rumours'. 'Gift of Screws' is a rawcous, whirlwind of a song, the sort of blistering stuff Lindsey recorded for 'Tusk'. The album finishes with two truly wonderful songs: the multi-layered chorus' of 'Underground' and 'Treason', both with wonderful harmonies and strumming guitars as you would expect from Mr. Buckingham. I, already, love this album. And whether a fan of his music or not, this is a varied, experimental and brilliant album.

Before he joined Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham was sketching out his brand of Brian Wilson-influenced pop with Stevie Nicks in the folky duo Buckingham Nicks. Mick Fleetwood invited the duo to join his band in late 1974. After Buckingham joined, the band's pop tendencies flowered under his direction. Not only did he provide the group with some brilliant, surprisingly dark pop songs, he sharpened the other members' songs with his production, arrangements, and breathtaking guitar playing.
