Roy Acuff is a pivotal figure, standing clearly at the crossroads of what had been termed hillbilly music and what would soon become modern country. No more than an adequate singer and fiddle player, Acuff still managed to hit just the right tone with his spare and simple songs, making him one of the first real stars of country music. This collection has his very biggest hits, but is way too short to be anything but a cursory introduction to Acuff's career. Given his somewhat maudlin approach to things, though, it might be all some listeners can bear.
