Unexpected Masterpiece

After learning about silversun pickups early last year and investing in Carnavas I soon realised that this band has something special going for themselves. Im normaly into Metal and Classic Rock so for me to get into a band like this definately ment they had some thing going for them as its not normaly my thing. Carnavas was a good album but i felt that their music could be taken so much further and that their debut was missing something, I am so glad to say that this second album is nothing short of stunning! Every song on here is epic in scale and catchy as hell. As i said before, I felt their debut was missing something, I now see that it was the extra layers of orchestra and other atmospherics that werent being used to the fullest have been added perfectly on this one. Its made their music jump from being good to amazing. I wasnt expecting this album to be this good, every song on here is a hit and there are no fillers in sight. The songs i would recommend for download are... The No Secret this year. Growing Old is Getting Old. The Royal We. It Nice To Know you Work Alone. Catch and Release Sort Of This album is gunna be up there in the album of the year lists and i hope it propels them into superstardom as they totaly deserve it.

Having had "Rusted Wheel" from the album; Carnavas, in my frequent playlist for a while I knew the sound of the Pickups' was something I liked - however it wasn't until I discovered "Lazy Eve" whilst playing guitar hero that the band really caught my ears with their melodic guitars, catchy riffs, soft and hazy vocals bursting to brilliant life. Silversun Pickups really are something special and "Swoon" deserves to be purchased if only for the song "Growing Old is Getting Old" - get in your car, put the windows down, drive and let their music carry you some place special into the night.

Alternative rock at its most brilliant

I dont write reviews usually on I-tunes, but i felt compelled to write one for this album. I am usually a big metal and hard rock fan, opting for everything from pantera to foo fighters, but this stuff caught me the moment I listened to the samples. The overall sound of this band is fantastic, with just enough reverb soaked guitar and keyboard to make the sound so smooth, yet at the same time there is a fantastic fuzzy undercurrent given by the drums and guitars. I can genuinely say every song on this album is good. That doesn't mean that they are all the same, oh no, the moods in the songs are fantastic, and the way the band build up and reduce dynamics throughout their songs keeps you interested without giving you a heart attack as in so much heavier, more juddery alt music. Songs such as 'substitution' are fantastic examples of this dynamic, with an inventive verse guitar riff, and then a warm wall of fuzz and reverb in the chorus. 'The Royal We' builds up brilliantly, before the vocalist spills over and gives it full belt, and you can see these guys no how to make the ground shake as well as write melodies; it is a certain single. 'The Draining' could easily have been written by Coheed and Cambria, with a fantastic dark intro guitar riff. The Nirvana style guitar riffs of 'Catch and Release' make a wonderful contrast to the mellow chorus. Nearly every type of listner can take somehting away from this; some of songs have a dark mood, but they never get depressing, and the guitars will satisfy any budding musician. The overall sound will certainky satisfy those craving the alternative-ness they desire in a band. These guys go from sounding like a mellow Coheed and Cambria, to a brother band of the klaxons, and some of the melodies wouldnt look out of place in a foo fighters song. I cannot say enough how good an all-round rock album this is, everyone will enjoy this for different reasons, one the best allround albums for a long time. GIVE IT A CHANCE, BUY IT I PROMISE YOU WIL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED. GO TO THEIR MYSPACE OF UNSURE.

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Los Angeles indie rockers whose organic but richly atmospheric sound (and their subsequent critical and commercial success) helped put the uber-hip Silver Lake scene on the map, Silversun Pickups were formed in 2002, initially using the name A Couple of Couples. The original handle reflected the fact that in the band's first lineup, lead guitarist Brian Aubert was romantically involved with drummer Elvira Gonzales, while rhythm guitarist Jack Kennedy was in a relationship with bassist Nikki Monninger....
