Lavish peaks

Proof positive that Benjamin Curtis ditched the Secret Machines for more than just hot twin action. This aspiring debut is a lustrous gathering of interweaving, angelic vocals, futuristic whirring percussion and drafts of expansive guitar/keys, all layered to animate a mass of colourful, astral dream-pop. It’s pure escapism, and in music what more could one ask for.

The most beautiful album you'll hear all year.

Everything on this album Formed by former Secret Machines man Benjamin Curtis, this is an amazing blend of electronic beats, blips and bleeps, fantastic instrumentation and all harboured by the beautiful melodies and harmonies of identical twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. The style ranges from dark and foreboding, almost hymnal tracks like Iamundernodisguise, to almost (but not quite) acoustic ditties like For Kalaja Mari to stunning life-affirming numbers like Half Asleep and Connjur. All topped off by the utterly epic Sempiternal / Amaranth which builds and builds over the course of ten minutes before disappearing into a sea of feedback. Impossibly amazing, and almost definitely the best album of 2009.

They debuted in 2007 on Sonic Cathedral with the 7" recording My Cabal, which featured a remix on the B-side from Robin Guthrie — Guthrie's Cocteau Twins, as well as several of the artists the Cocteaus inspired, from My Bloody Valentine to Medicine, as well as Curve, being apparent touchstones....
