Album Review

The second album by indie-electro pop trio Miike Snow once again fuses the leisurely vocals of American singer Andrew Wyatt with warm electronic soundscapes provided by the Swedish production team behind Britney Spears' "Toxic." As is a common hallmark for sophomore albums, Happy to You is not as singles-oriented as the Miike Snow debut, and tends to be a little more adventurous. Even so, it is still a good-natured record. There is an intensified Coldplay-esque orchestral drama to the lush, panoramic production and the twee melodies will appeal to mainstream fans, but like on the debut, wonky dance is their specialty. "Paddling Out" borrows piano stabs and a four-on-the-floor beat from '90s house, "Black Tin Box" is a sultry number featuring indie songstress Lykke Li, and "God Help This Divorce" is a single that manages to be sparkling despite its brooding undertones. Toeing the line is a common theme for the group. Happy to You is an album that aims for commercial appeal, so there is a noticeable push and pull between prescribed pop and the eclectic electro that the team is known for, but the songs that land in the dead center have a nice even balance. [Happy to You was also released with a bonus disc containing two non-LP tracks ("Garden" and "No Starry World") and five remixes of songs from the album.]
