Album Review

Wishing to escape the superstar expectations that sank Blind Faith before it was launched, Eric Clapton retreated with several sidemen from Delaney & Bonnie to record the material that would form Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. From these meager beginnings grew his greatest album. Duane Allman joined the band shortly after recording began, and his spectacular slide guitar pushed Clapton to new heights. Then again, Clapton may have gotten there without him, considering the emotional turmoil he was in during the recording. He was in hopeless, unrequited love with Patti Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison, and that pain surges throughout Layla, especially on its epic title track. But what really makes Layla such a powerful record is that Clapton, ignoring the traditions that occasionally painted him into a corner, simply tears through these songs with burning, intense emotion. He makes standards like "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and "Nobody Knows You (When You're Down and Out)" into his own, while his collaborations with Bobby Whitlock — including "Any Day" and "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" — teem with passion. And, considering what a personal album Layla is, it's somewhat ironic that the lovely coda "Thorn Tree in the Garden" is a solo performance by Whitlock, and that the song sums up the entire album as well as "Layla" itself. [In 2011, Layla was released with a bonus disc of outtakes, B-sides, and new remixes.]

Mind blowing!

This is definitely one of if not THE best album ever recorded, and at the same time the most underrated. I'm 21 and have owned the album for years on CD and original vinyl, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this Super Deluxe edition. The remastered tracks sound fantastic, and there were new songs that I hadn't heard before which I've had on repeat since I got it. It's my favourite album, I love it. Clapton and Allman guitar duelling on Key To The Highway is such an unbelievable track, and the other band members in Whitlock, Radle and Gordon are simply sublime! Everyone needs to have this album in their record collections.

Just brilliant!

I agree with the previous review, such an under rated album. The playing is sublime. I consider myself a muso but got into this album only fairly recently. Shocked at just how good it is. I love the extra tracks especially the Johnny Cash show numbers, check it out on You Tube. Most people just consider this a Clapton album but it is way more than that, Duane Allman's contribution is truly knockout and the great Bobby Wghitlock co-wrote a good number of the songs. His voice is compliments Clapton's and his soulful leanings certainly come through. Enjoy!

Layla and other assorted stuff

The original album is an undoubted masterpiece. This remastered version is both an excellent reflection of the original and contains a superb and comprehensive selection of extras. From strident, cocksure blues workouts to west coast rock there is not a duff track on the album. This reviewer is a great fan of John Mayall and Cream but in my humble opinion this period in Clapton's career is a triumphant pinnacle.
