iTunes Review

After professing his love for Gossip, producer Rick Rubin got his wish and committed the garrulous garage rock threesome to tape. For a band used to recording albums in hours, Gossip had the luxury to sculpt a set of songs with a producer who’s coaxed career-changing performances (Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Rubin works similar magic on Music for Men, peeling back the rough exterior and exposing the heartbeat underneath Gossip’s transformative rock ‘n’ roll mayhem. Vocalist Beth Ditto and guitarist Brace Paine work in tandem to build walls sweating with emotion and verve. “Love Long Distance”, "Men In Love", and “Pop Goes the World” shows Gossip’s sharpened disco pedigree with percussion and keyboards providing ample lift for Ditto’s clever wordplay. Music for Men scrapes its nails across rock, soul, gospel, dance, drawing blood and leaving an indelible mark.

The Album Where it all comes together for Gossip!

In all honesty I never really got Gossip when they were The Gossip. There can and was no denying Beth Dito’s quiet considerable stage presence, and that strong beautiful voice, although for me their output was rough and just a bit to edgy and never seemed worth the download. “Music for Men” which is produced by Rick Rubin has of course received quite a bit of pre release publicity, and I have now read quite a few reviews none of which seem that complimentary! They all seem to be expecting another Chilli Peppers or Mr Rubin to “stadium up” the band as some have put it…I don’t think they got it at all. To me Rick Ruben has taken their sound and funked it up, smoothed them off a bit and yet still seems to have retained a raw edge to their sound. Beth Ditos vocals just soar and the guitar is sounding just spot on. You can hear the Rick Rubin influence on this album big time, and to me they are the perfect foil for him to work his magic. The deluxe version has the addition of a Fed Falke remix of “Heavy Cross” which as a dance mix should be no surprise and works brilliantly. As I say this is the album where I think it all comes together for Gossip.

The best thing all year without any doubt!!!!!

Dimestore DIAMOND

This album is absolutely amazing. It is top class Indie-Rock, so if that's what you like then you must download this album. Each track has a good rythym and subtle lyrics. Its good to dance to, but you can relax if you wish. I have to say its one of the best albums this year. I was never a huge fan of the gossip, I just knew a couple of songs, this album won me over. Its a work of genius and you don't get sick of it, no matter how long you listen to it. Personally, I think the best songs are: Heavy Cross; Four Letter Word;Pop Goes The World and Dimestore Diamond.

Originally from Searcy, Arkansas, this punk trio moved to Olympia, WA, joining the roster of the indie rock label K Records. Guitarist Nathan (aka Brace Paine), drummer Kathy, and singer Beth Ditto proclaimed, "We started a band 'cause we were bored. Our mission is to make you dance, and if you're not gonna dance, just stay at home and listen to the oldies station." K released a self-titled 7" in 1999, and their full-length debut, That's Not What I Heard, was distributed by Kill Rock Stars in late...
