HMS Pinafore, Gilbert and Sullivan's Greatness, Or A Disaster In Casting?

I went to see a local production of HMS Pinafore, and have since caught the Gilbert and Sullivan bug to such an extreme that I went to see the performance twice. After final night, I found myself somewhat deprived for the beautiful songs, I'd grown to love in those two days. So I popped on to iTunes to see what I could find. Naxos did an edition costing a snip at under £5, however after listening to the previews the Soprano soloist singing the role of "Buttercup" left me unfulfilled; so instead I opted for this £15.99 recording. Despite finding it higher quality than the Naxos edition, it still left me feeling somewhat hard done to because of the lack of detail such as the omission oh "well" in "What never?" "No, Never?" "What Never?" "(well), Hardly Ever!" (those familiar with HMS Pinafore will understand how crucial this 'what' is). On another note, the principles lack to an extend the ability to act vocally; which left me simply nostalgic and desperate. If there is a performance of HMS Pinafore locally, save your £15.99 and go to watch it live, however if you are just desperate for your fix of one of the most memorable G and S operas, this is the one to buy.

Lyricist Gilbert was born in London on November 18, 1836; the son of a retired naval surgeon, he was kidnapped by Italian brigands at the age of two, but upon his release, he settled into a rather unremarkable childhood,...
