11 Songs, 37 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Anchored by his trademark sonic curiosity, Prince’s 2015 album is a glorious free jam of styles. The master’s lascivious R&B lies at its core, but there’s an EDM flirtation that’s endlessly intriguing. Rita Ora assists on the fuzzed-up, defiant “Ain’t About 2 Stop,” “Mr. Nelson” takes it cues from several international dance floors, while “1000 X’s and O’s” (a song originally intended for Rosie Gaines) is an effortless slow jam fit to grind with Prince’s very best.

The pulse is strong even if the heartbeats irregular

As a hugely long standing fan I'm both frustrated and excited by this offering. Far too much trying to prove he's down with the kids when in fact those occasions when he allows his maturity to come through demonstrates he's still very much cutting edge. I would love to hear the man that prince is talk about his life experience, June, x's face for two are superb but the first four tracks are so weak it's painful.

Not for me

I'm a prince fan but can be subjective, some of his material I love and some I don't. Unfortunately this latest offering is in the latter category. I really liked Art Official Age and hoped the quirky funk would continue. There are albums that I buy on iTunes that I wished I hadn't (all of Madonna's offerings since Confessions) and this one - I'll go back to Art Official Age and Plectrum Electrum. All that said I think prince is the most interesting male artist on the planet and I look forward to his next effort. For me this album feels like he's trying to hard to find a younger audience, pairings with artists like Rita Ora(I have nothing against Rita Ora) bring nothing to the prince table and I'm perplexed to be honest about reworking tracks from Art Official Age. No stand out tracks on this album for me which is a real shame.

Modern and different

Streamed this on Tidal and it has had some claiming it's his best work for some time and others claim it's his worst.

For me it's somewhere in between.

What you will find on here is a modern, fresh, pop like sound from an artist who is always trying to find something new.

June is my fave track and will probably last with me for a long long time. Excellent.

You then get the superb 1000 X's and O's and the bass rumbling funky X's Face.

It will attract many new Prince fans but some of the old ones may not be happy with his new sound but things are always evolving.

No classic but well worth your hard earned dosh to see a legendary artist keeping up with the times 👍🏻
