iTunes Review

After gamely circling art-rock, heartfelt indie and daring electronica, Bloc Party decide to cover all three for album number five. The big difference here: frontman Kele Okereke’s exploration of faith. Starting with the church roof-raising, synth-rave stomp of “The Love Within”, HYMNS filters its spiritual and existential inquisitiveness through the band’s complete stylistic arsenal. The chanty “Only He Can Heal Me” establishes the album’s restless, portentous tone, “The Good News” finds a propulsive country groove and the electro stabs of “Living Lux” showcase Okereke’s skill for red-raw break-up despair.

How disappointing. Where are the guitar licks??

Not the best

Became a big fan of these guys back when silent alarm dropped. Enjoyed all they've released since. But the sound of the new tracks is awful and so away from what these guys usually produce in terms of quality in both production and emotion. I know there has been a line-up shake-up, but it feels like they've lost their way. The only reason I didn't give it less than 2/5 is because the rest of the album may yet surprise me

Consisting of singer/guitarist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist/singer Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong, the band was formerly known as Angel Range and Union before settling on Bloc Party. Okereke and Lissack met each other through mutual friends at the Reading Festival, and discovered that they had musical tastes as well as friends...
