Editors’ Notes

This collection chronicling Neil Young’s first decade as a musician features plenty of jaw-dropping revelations, including the previously unreleased “I Wonder” (a blueprint for the classic “Don’t Cry No Tears”) and early demos of “Sugar Mountain” and “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing.” Young’s talent is evident from the beginning. The Squires’ “I’ll Love You Forever” is a raw piece of Young melancholy folded into a traditional love ballad. “(I’m a Man And) I Can’t Cry” casts Young as a country-influenced vocalist. As Young becomes increasingly confident in the studio and live, we hear him blossom into the idiosyncratic artist who brings the world “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” “Birds” and “Down By the River,” all re-mastered for maximum effect.

Customer Reviews

Keep to your principles

I'm disappointed to see the price of this. Charging 99p per song is letting down the ethos you set up with - fixed pricing. You are the original and still market leader. Stick to your guns. This collection is for major Young fans only. You can get the real version for the same price with all the packaging and photos.

too much

Why are these songs priced at 99p ?

Archives

'Archives' is a stunning collection of songs, and I doubt that you would find better ones throughout the history of music, certainly within its time period. However, the question begs - whats the point of it all? There is only a handful of rare or unreleased songs on offer and the rest you have already heard and loved. Live at The Riverboat is a great recording and I will be downloading those tracks. Total respect to the man and his music, but I suspect that more, better gems are to come.

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s through...
