Almost a decade after Maurice White formed the spiritually minded Earth, Wind & Fire, the band hit upon one of their sweatiest, most sensual anthems, "Boogie Wonderland". Featuring alluring lead vocals by female R&B trio The Emotions, this disco stunner remains a surefire dance-floor filler. In a mellower mood, the aching "After the Love Has Gone" is one of Philip Bailey's most enduring ballads, and the slinky "You and I" is an uplifting, joyous love song.

Masterful pop funk at its pinnicle

This album taught me an incredible amount about arranging and production. It elevated funk music to the level and detail demonstrated by the great big band arrangers of the 50s, like Quincey, Riddle and Costa. Thomas Washington (aka Tom Tom 84) did amazing horn arrangements and I've never heard anything as good since. Alas, the Linn drum was invented that year and popular music went downhill from then...the DJs and haircut brigade took over. Sad...
