iTunes Review

It’s only a surprise that it has taken Sting this long to put an orchestra to many of his most beloved tunes. Sting has always been an ambitious musician, hiring the finest jazz sidemen, exploring the deepest sonic textures a studio could handle and writing songs that often defied the basic logic of the standard pop song. Here, he takes an unsentimental approach to his own catalog and reworks things with a free hand. While it’s tempting to compare and contrast the tracks, it’s best to imagine these songs as brand new songs and hear where the emotional journeys take us. His early Police hit “Roxanne” is a somber plea. “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” has a string section tracing its harmonies. “When We Dance” is a sweet, romantic tune designed for candles or a crackling fire. “The End of the Game” features a sparkling vocal. The entire album is less a “classical” Sting album than an adult-contemporary collection with an emphasis on the everlasting textures of an orchestra.

Customer Reviews

Contrary to other "reviews" on this page, I have both purchased and listened to the album and I must say here and now that its fantastic. Its not pop but its not classical either. It is a moungral, a hybrid, a fusion. The important thing is that you can recognise the tunes and the songs but sting realy does continue to inspire with this refreshing collection of some of his great songs. Highlights for me are next to you which quite frankly is sublime, end of the game is a must if only for the supurb punchy bass riff let alone its beauty. Other greats are the bonus track straight to my heart as well as she's too good for me and we work the black seam together which is now alot more moody than it was. Sting's journey continues to please music lovers and annoy his critics and I suspect this will be no different with this new offering, put simply the critics are wrong! The album is a masterpiece and Sting is a genius buy this and enjoy!

Fantastic to listen to. Well worth it

Why ths isn't higher in the chart baffles me

Very well arranged

A superb arrangement of a few of his well known, and some not so well known tracks. This is a very well balanced album, not to all tastes as the die-hard sting fans dont get to hear the classic sound of his band.

This really is better than some of the other orchestrations of modern artists (Metallica's S&M is about the only other album to rival the quality of the music arrangements).

Done before, maybe but this is better. You wont be dissappointed!!

After disbanding the Police at the peak of their popularity in 1984, Sting quickly established himself as a viable solo artist, one obsessed with expanding the boundaries of pop music. Sting incorporated heavy elements of jazz, classical, and worldbeat into his music, writing lyrics that were literate and self-consciously meaningful, and he was never afraid to emphasize this fact in the press. For such unabashed ambition, he was equally loved and reviled, with supporters believing that he was at...
