The album your music collection wants for its birthday!!!

It would be very easy to kick off this album review by throwing all the tired (but genuine and accurate) comparisons to Jamie's voice: Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Hathaway Et Al, but it doesn't really cover this album; Lidell's 4th.

Bluntly, this is REAL music; unlike other artists that tend to fall into a supporting role on their own songs under the shadow of their super-producers, Jamie shines! Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor & Beck lend their not inconsiderable talents to Jamie's voice perfectly. (on the moment's when Jamie doesn't produce the tracks himself - What a Geeza!) In the way of collaborations, Feist and the massively slept-on Nikka Costa add their vocals beautifully to the achingly lovely desert ballad "Big Drift" and the hugely funky "Enough's Enough".

Other standout tracks includes:

"She Needs Me"; a track that, by rights, should be high on the playlist of any soul radio station that includes "Only the HIts" in their promotional tagline! The Commodores & Earth, Wind & Fire would kill to have a song of this calibre to compliment the rest of their genre-defying back catalogue!

"Completely Exposed" opens the album perfectly and showcases the new sonic landscape the album covers. Try not to nod your head to this one; i dare you!

"Coma Chameleon" is a sinister, guitar-driven rock-soul monster!! - according to Jamie on the "Behind the scenes" video to accompany the release of the album, it was recorded whilst Jamie had a cold. Evidently, colds and flu's do not stop this man delivering a thumping track!! And that's exactly what it is.

The albums title track, "Compass", would not be out of place in Quentin Tarrantino's "Kill Bill" with it's desert-folk feel and mariachi middle.

Given that Jamie has deftly covered soul, funk, electronica, pop, Lo-Fi and "alternative" in the labelling of his genre(s), "Compass" plays almost like a Greatest Hits album - all elements of the above pulled into a All Killer, no Filler album that will have existing Jamie Lidell fans giddy with joy and new fans saying "Why haven't i owned songs by this man before??????"

I'm clearly not a professional music reviewer: i only know what i like and this album has to be the best £7.99 i've spent this year! I urge you to do the same now if not sooner!!!

I can't stop playing this album.Amazing track after amazing track. The standouts for me are 'your sweet boom', ' she needs me' amd 'enough is enough'.Seriously, if you are a REAL music fan , you need to get this album along with his previous offerings.

Nice and wonky, love it! Would be 5 stars if he'd let himself get properly weird again.

British producer Jamie Lidell became as widely recognized for his effective neo-soul vocals and performances as for his earlier career as a producer of groovy experimental techno. After some EP releases for labels such as Mosquito and an appearance on the Mille Plateaux-released Industrialsamplecoregouchbeat compilation, Lidell collaborated with equally well-known techno producer Cristian Vogel as Super_Collider in 1999. Following this project, most noteworthy for the popular track "Darn (Cold Way...
