Editors’ Notes

Elle Varner’s father, Jimmy Varner, was a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter who worked with Kool & The Gang, while her mother, Mikelyn Roderick, sang backup for Barry White and Tevin Campbell. Her honest talent as both a singer and songwriter is immediately evident from the opening song of this 2012 debut album. “Only Wanna Give It to You” kicks off Perfectly Imperfect with a hard-grooving R&B jam punctuated by Varner’s soulful grit. The following “Refill” shows more creativity, with looped country fiddle and stuttering snare drum garnishing a seductive serenade as Varner wails like a younger Macy Gray (with Keyshia Cole’s range). When her voice breaks up and she pulls back with restraint, Varner exposes her vulnerability. She gives songs like “Not Tonight” and “So Fly” an indelible human touch; the former is a gripping slow jam about feeling insecure and unconfident in the presence of a deep crush, while the latter muses on body self-image issues.

Customer Reviews

Such a great album! she needs way more recognition here in England. She's definitely going places

Very Cool

Trying to find some words which explain how I feel listening to this album, difficult but I want to make the effort to say somethiong about it 'cause I listen to so much new music and this sounds special.

It's fresh, it's cool, it feels different. Something special about it, like there won't be another one for a while - like waiting on d'angelo and lauren hill; perhaps we can add elle to that list. It's kinda exciting waiting isn't it, and it makes the original tracks, the ground-breaking ones (like brown sugar and tell him) even better - right?

It's quality, that's what it is. Worth buying or ideally just listening to for free somewhere? But the artists need their money right. Tough choices in tough times. Get it and play it whatever. It's what music should be, whatever the words to describe it.

Simple Amazing

Yes i agree with that review, that Perfectly Imperfect is "one of 2012's most pleasing and promising debuts", the whole sound of the album is just great and fits into R&B/Soul perfectly. Her voice is amazing, and she did well at letting her unquiness shine. I can confidently say that nobody will regret buying this album!

One of the most promising R&B artists to emerge during the early 2010s, singer and songwriter Elle Varner grew up in a musical family — one that spent much of its time together in recording studios. Both of Varner's parents were music industry veterans. Mikelyn Roderick, her mother, was a backup vocalist for Barry White and has written and recorded with Tevin Campbell and Rahsaan Patterson; she also released an album on the Dome label in 2007. Varner's father, Jimmy Varner, was a songwriter,...
