Album Review

This is a stripped-down (there is no CD booklet) reissue of Motown's 1986 Marvin Gaye release of the same title, which in turn was a CD issue of the Telstar LP set. As a single-disc collection it's decent, but hardly the end all of Marvin Gaye compilations, although it does include Gaye's masterful 1982 Columbia Records hit "Sexual Healing" along with classic Motown hits from various stages of his career like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "What's Going On," and several of his duets with Tammi Terrell. For a greatest-hits type anthology, though, there's a fair amount of lesser tracks and filler here, and better collections are easily available.

Adequate, but not all thats goin on

An adequate illustration of the range and variety of one of the most beautiful voices of all time, the far-and-away outstanding trio being the sweetly tempo'd "Let's Get It On", the eternal bliss of "What's Going On" and it's sibling "...Mercy Me", then the plaintive strains of "Abraham, Martin and John", the latter closer to Gospel, and which probably best exemplifies how that sweet, smooth voice warbled in a blues lyric that resonated with his compassionate faith. "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Too Busy...", "How Sweet It Is..." and the duets are essential inclusions, if trembling stars set against his mature magical best, no matter the merits of the individual song, nor how gorgeous the female accompaniment of the duet. Peel "The Onion Song" from the grooves enough times, and it tires. Slide into "What's Going On" any time, and it never, ever does. That said, check out "What's Going On", the album - especially the Deluxe Edition with it's gorgeous alternative versions - and now you're gettin' down to the essential, eternal Marvin.
