not so simple

well done iTunes - even if it took more than 2 years to get this great album out there. this has all the hallmarks of a classic. within a few bars of almost every song you'll find yourself scratching your head wondering where you've heard it before, yet it has a freshness and energy that marks it out as different from the start. great vocals (with some stunning harmonies), fine, but understated, musicianship all underpin a remarkable set of songs for a debut album. and all the work of db himself.

there's so much here to love: the sweeping, majestic arc of 'give me another day', the pure, fantastic pop of 'simple things' and 'don't wanna', the irresistible groove of 'about a girl.' the coda of 'i think you understand' brings to mind the beach boys classic, 'surfs up' with the emotional depth to keep a broken heart afloat for eternity while, on a lighter note, 'the world is coming to an end' out-jams jamiroquai.

throughout it all, db's humour and charm shine through - perhaps the most potent aspects of a great album. and speaking of humour, iTunes needs to put up the video for 'don't wanna' (and he even directs his own videos, as well as doing everything else - maybe he could get the world out of the mess it's in if he has a few hours to spare). buy 'recyclable', and you'll be playing it over and over for a long time to come. like i said: a classic.
