iTunes Review

The title track to Los Campesinos!’ Romance Is Boring is so purely Los Campesinos! — punchy, acerbic, gleeful — that it stands as the record’s centerpiece. But opener “In Media Res” has an experimental essence, and its unhurried blend of blaring horns, glittering glockenspiel and synth swells herald an evolutionary jump: the Welsh indie darlings brazenly push their own boundaries on album number three. Their website claims Romance Is Boring is about “the decay of the human body and mental breakdown,” but we’d swear it has more to do with twenty-something angst, beer, and — the newest ingredient — reluctant maturation. It’s that newest flavor that adds depth and dimension to tracks like the playful and tense “We’ve Got Your Back,” the mighty mini-epic, “I Warned You: Do Not Make an Enemy of Me,” and the harrowingly beautiful “The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future.” (We detect Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu — one of several guests — on this powerful track).  With even sharper lyrical barbs and new musical reach, Romance Is Boring belies its title, with glorious spit and vinegar.

Romance might be, but this album isn't

Los campesinos!'s third effort at first seemed a bit disappointing to me. But thinking back, I didn't like anything campesinos on first listen. Now I realise that this album is superb. A must buy. Every song is brilliant, though my favourites are 'the sea...', 'we've got your back', 'straight in at 101', and 'in medias res'. I suggest you buy the whole album rather than individual tracks, though. You won't be disappointed.

Good effort

Another very good record from LC! here. Musically and lyrically a lot darker than previous attempts but this comes off very well for the most part. However, sone aspects of the album strike me as a little pointless (interludes anyone) but definitely worth the money. If you're a fan of Xiu Xiu then it's a no brained really. But I'd buy Hold on Now, Youngster... first as it remains their best album to date.

Best Song...

The Sea Is.... What a beautiful song <3

Celebrating a bratty, tongue-in-cheek viewpoint and a spunky indie punk style similar to Art Brut while applying an assortment of instruments akin to Architecture in Helsinki, the seven-piece group Los Campesinos! (a Spanish name that roughly translates to "the Peasants") formed in 2006 in Cardiff, Wales. The lineup took shape around Cardiff University students Aleksandra (keyboard, horn), Ellen (bass), Gareth (glockenspiel), Harriet (violin, keyboard), Neil (guitar), Ollie (drums), and Tom (guitar),...
