The Men - New Moon

The last three albums from The Men have been utterly heart felt expressions from the bowls of Punk. Delivered with peerless panache and without contest. With this fourth album we find The Men in a very different place. This was not the album we might have expected... for those like me wanting still more noise and all out thrash into oblivion it is initially a hard album to understand. But listen closer and you start to see them quite naturally surface from the swamps of noise to explore the traditions of Americana that have engendered them. You can easily signpost the journey from Buffalo Springfield, MC5’s, Neil Young, The Stooges, Sonic Youth and so many more... delicacy is not something you would expect to find here but it is investigated in tracks such as ‘High and lonesome’ and ‘Bird Song’, delivered with sensitivity and tenderness. Mistake me not, these guys, sorry Men still rock. ‘I saw her face’ is Harvest / Crazy Horse played to the power of n. The Men are truly without peers. They are the inheritors of that above stated lineage of American Rock and sonic experimentation and without doubt they hold a mantle that cannot be given, only found. This album becomes a more daring step towards exploring those inherited traditions and influences rather than merely regurgitating a complacent punk growl. The Men continue to clean the floor here with their special brew of raw abrasion and abandon in tracks like ‘The Brass’ and the newly committed ‘I saw her face’.... get out there... what band is as genuine and more concise?

Nice sounds

Impressed with this album.
I am a fan of the recognised genres I hear on this album. I like bands pushing themselves out of the comfort zone and discovering new sounds.

The band recorded in Python Patrol studio for its Sacred Bones debut, Leave Home, which was released in 2011. They returned the following March with Open Your Heart, expanding their musical palette to meld country, psych, and surf influences with their blistering rock. Their...
