Album Review

This North Carolina old-time music legend and his merry crew of sidemen recorded a great deal of material in the '20s and early '30s, and the County label has reissued just about everything Poole did at one point or another. A listener might expect that, by the time the archivists get around to compiling a fourth volume, it might be something like trying to create a meal out of leftovers found in the back of the refrigerator; although some tracks on this collection might confirm such a suspicion, the Poole group operated on a much higher level then most households do when it comes to storing food. Thus, there are delights galore on this collection, such as the edgy "You Ain't Talkin' to Me and the lovely "Sunny Tennessee," the latter the artist's first recording ever, and pretty darn good at that. Several instrumentals are also included, some of them showcases for the superb fiddler Lonnie Austin.
