iTunes Review

For many country artists, steady success translates into stale material and terminal slickness. Vince Gill rewrote this stereotype on 1998's The Key, a masterful return to his bluegrass and country-rock roots that radiates an effortless integrity. Gill sings with an understated confidence and gentlemanly grace, displaying the same winning high-tenor charm that first won him fame in the mid-'80s. His material has rarely been stronger. From the Appalachian echoes of "The Hills of Caroline" to the honky-tonk edge of "Kindly Keep It Country," the songs offer evocative lyrics to match his stellar vocals. His pairing with Patty Loveless, "My Kind of Woman/My Kind of Man," is a country duet for the ages. "Let Her In," a tender sketch of family love in the aftermath of divorce, ranks among the most moving tunes Gill ever recorded. The Key is sure to open any country fan's heart.

Customer Reviews

Just a brilliant country music album!

I've always regarded Vince Gill as someone who has one of the finest voices in country music (and music in general) but isn't someone that I would listen to often. However, this album has always been on my playlist as it's one of the best country albums of the 90s without question. From the crying in your beer tunes like "Kindly keep it country" and "There's not much love here anymore" to the duet "My kind of woman/My kind of man" where he duels lyrics with the equally gifted Patty Loveless. Just a top, top album for country music fans.

Vince Gill paid nearly a decade-and-a-half of dues en route to becoming one of the most popular country stars of the '90s. Starting out as a bluegrass singer and multi-instrumentalist, he initially made his name with country-rockers Pure Prairie League and spent the '80s as part of country's new traditionalist movement before finding massive success as a contemporary country hitmaker. Gill had strong mainstream appeal, yet enough songwriting chops and grounding in tradition that he could maintain...
