Take a chance...
This mix of cover versions and original tracks is well worth the download. For my money, Jarvis Cocker and Beth Ditto doing a rework of Heaven 17's "Tempatation", or The Prodigy's version of The Specials' "Ghost Town" are worth it on their own. "Don't Look Back in Anger" is as different from the Oasis original as the Mike Flowers version of "Wonderwall". The other cover versions aren't bad either. Of the original tracks, Maximo Park, Cribs and British Sea Power really stand out ("Tug Boat" has the same 'quiet start building to a crescendo' feeling of U2's "All I Want Is You"), while Thomas Tantrum putting lyrics to part of "Swan Lake" is... certainly different. With at least 12 good tracks here, you might as well buy the whole album (12 tracks = same price as the album), and get, in effect, 17 'free' ones.
Well Mr BeerCats. Not quite such a mix. but good nontheless.
To correct Beercats review, not such a mix between covers and originals. For example, the Cribs track he mentions as an original is actually a replacements cover....but never mind, this album is really worth digging into and then finding out who did the original if you don't already have it. fascinating stuff.
This is a case of the idea overwhelming the result. Independent Labels should be celebrated as they have over the years brought countless bands and artists to our ears, even many of the major labels bands started on Independents. For me the best stuff is to be found on the second CD. Of the well known acts, British Sea Power, Charlatans, Cribs excel and of the new artists, Bang Bangs and A.Human rise to the top of an impressive pack.
