iTunes Review

Quincy Jones has unparalleled talent for bringing different sets of musicians together. For decades his occasional solo albums have served as meeting places for the leading talents of a particular era, and Q - Soul Bossa Nostra is no different. Jones is probably the only person on the planet who can unite gospel star BeBe Winans and scary Memphis street rappers Three 6 Mafia. Soul Bossa Nostra (a pun on “Soul Bossa Nova”, the 1962 Quincy Jones theme that was later resuscitated for the Austin Powers franchise) is a celebratory retrospective, but without the usual sloppy nostalgia. Jones asked the biggest and best stars of today’s rap and R&B scene to reinterpret songs from the composer’s back catalog. It’s a shrewd tactic of preserving his legacy while also carrying it into the future. The diversity of talent here is astonishing — aside from the big stars of today, Jones also reached out to Southern rap firebrand David Banner, hip-hop originator Q-Tip, and the aforementioned Winans. The results are fresh and often unexpected, and the album confirms Jones’ reputation as the most forward-thinking 77-year-old in modern music.

Pointless!

Let me start by saying that I'm a massive, massive fan.

This album is really dire and I can't believe that what might be Q's final album is what he might be remembered for, particularly by the younger audience. It's an absolutely pointless album that possibly only works as a vanity project. Every single cover is worse than the original. By a very long way! Akon murders Strawberry Letter. Jamie Foxx is appaling on Give me the night, as is J Hudson, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Robin Thicke on other songs. It isn't so much the singing or rapping, its the production. Its an attempt at a modern take on old standards that just don't work.

I was so excited when this was released but I am so disappointed! Not a patch on Q's Jook Joint or Back on the Block or any of the earlier releases. Come on Q, you didn't need the money, right?
