Album Review

Originally released in 1985, Island Life compiles highlights from Grace Jones' 1977 debut through 1985’s Slave to the Rhythm. It’s a concise overview that features four Top Ten U.S. club hits (“I Need a Man,” “Do or Die,” “Pull Up to the Bumper,” “Slave to the Rhythm”), as well as an additional smattering of choice cuts from her late-‘70s collaborations with Tom Moulton and her stellar ‘80s work with Sly & Robbie. It’s a decent introduction for casual fans but lacks crucial material like “Warm Leatherette” and “Nipple to the Bottle.” A later edition, dubbed Island Life 2, adds "Pars," "Feel Up," and two remixes of "Sex Drive."

A classic collection of hits and disco greats. they don't make them like this anymore, shame. The production values are stunning on this collection and todays top female stars could get a few tips by listening to this album.

if Carlsberg made albums.....

this is my favourite album ever....all the songs are brilliantly put together, with camp disco like Do or die, to sultry spoken songs like Walking in the rain.....starting with the 70's and finishing with the 80's you can see the progression Grace makes, and the change in direction in her work.....Slave to the rhythm is an absolute anthem!!!!!

Music Salad

In this album, there is such a mix of beats, moods and vocal arrangement that you must like at least one song . My personal favourite is 'La Vie' because it is such a beautiful song with an unusual tenderness. Great Album. Great Buy

Grace Jones was one of the more unforgettable artists to emerge from New York City's hedonistic Studio 54 disco scene of the late '70s. Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Jones was raised in a strict and devoutly Pentecostal household by her parents, who eventually moved to the U.S. and left Jones and her siblings in the care of their grandmother and an abusive step-grandfather. At the age of 13, the Jones children joined their parents in the States. Jones studied theater at Syracuse University before...
