Album Review

Whenever a new album comes out that features the guitar work of Paul Gilbert, it's anyone's guess as to what it'll sound like — it could either be over-the-top shredding (à la Racer X) or melodic rock with an emphasis on pop hooks (à la Mr. Big). On his 2005 solo release, Spaceship One, Gilbert manages to somehow combine the two different musical worlds and also adds a splash of power pop to the proceedings as well. But this shouldn't come as much of a surprise to longtime fans, as Gilbert has voiced his appreciation of pop eccentric Todd Rundgren over the years (even appearing as part of the choir/chorus on Rundgren's 1989 release Nearly Human). This is especially reflected in the hard-edged power pop ditty "Every Hot Girl Is a Rockstar" (which contains a riff that is highly reminiscent of the early Cheap Trick classic, "He's a Whore") and "Mr. Spock." That said, Spaceship One is not completely power pop — "One Way to Hell" is total '80s party metal (akin to the aforementioned Racer X), while "G9" is a melancholic, acoustic based instrumental. With an emphasis on the poppier side of things, Spaceship One is bound to appeal more to Mr. Big fans rather than admirers of Racer X.

Well Worth Buying As An Intro To A Great Talent

For those who do not know Paul Gilbert, he is a guitar player of terrifying proportions whose influences are everything from Pop (on which this album is heavily based) through to shred (for which you had better look under Racer X). Either way, his talent is held in high regard by the best of the best and his recent joining of the G3 tour is indicative of his credentials. His solo work (he is best know for his work as the guitar player for Mr Big - the rock band of To Be With You fame - and as ace shredder with Racer X) is a lighter an easily accessible offering which highlights catchy pop tunes alongside his jaw-dropping guitar skills. What is great about him is not only his skill but that he is a no-attitude individual whose enjoyment of playing flows off the speakers and is infectious. Well worth a purchase if you like your guitar but are open to more pop. And if you like it, try Acoustic Samurai and Gilbert Hotel. If you prefer more distortion, try Get Out Of My Yard which is a tour de force of guitar mastery. And if you get the chance to see him live, expect to see everything from Sabbath to the Spice Girls with some Bach and Van Halen thrown in. A talent who deserves more recognition, give it a try.
