Approach With Caution

This is the first to be released on iTunes of the compilations that McL (tireless editor of the Umphrey's McGee podcast) puts together to showcase the best and most interesting of the improvised rock that this Chicago band plays throughout the year. You only get the improv, not the song, so it's really a specialist purchase for people who are either big fans of the band or very interested in improvisation. In any case, the safest thing for a prospective purchaser is to download (for free) the Umphrey's McGee Podcast number 66, which is the companion to this volume. Then come back here and buy this, because it's really very good.

A jam band coming out of the Midwest in the mid-'90s, Umphrey's McGee edged toward the Frank Zappa side of the improv rock scale, as opposed to the Grateful Dead/Allman Brothers Band direction espoused by many of their contemporaries, like the Big Wu. The members of Umphrey's McGee met at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
