Album Review

The Charlatans celebrated the 15th anniversary of 1997's Tellin' Stories in grand style, releasing a double-disc reissue of the album and performing the album in its entirety twice in the summer of 2012. Tellin' Stories Live is a souvenir of the June 8th gig at HMV Hammersmith Apollo and it finds the Charlatans in fighting form as they run through the album (throwing in the B-side "Don't Need a Gun" at the midway point, excising "Rob's Theme"), the end results sounding a little leaner and lighter than they did in 1997 but the band compensates with determination and muscle. Once the album is completed they go through greatest hits — "Weirdo," "Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over," "The Only One I Know" — and deep cuts, turning the whole affair into a mild delight for the fans.
