iTunes Review

It may have been born amid late night recording sessions and drained booze bottles (or rather, “Thinking/And sinking the wine,” as Guy Garvey snarls on “Picky Bugger”) but there’s a fierce clarity to Elbow’s third record. Whether paying heartmelting tribute to his friends (“Puncture Repair”) or savaging politicians (the title track), little escapes Garvey’s sharp eye. And what’s more, the sound—produced for the first time by pianist Craig Potter—is bigger and brawnier than ever.

"But the music always gives me a lift"

As always, the lyrics to every song are genius ranging from the satirical "Leaders of the Free World" ('The leaders of the free world/Are just little boys throwing stones') to the innocent and melodious "My Very Best" ('You've gone /Gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart'). Each tell their own story of life and the way they each link make this album sound more like live, dynamic theatre than an album full of detached, separate songs. The lyrics combined with the uncomplicated and beautiful music create yet another perfect Elbow album.

Absolutely brilliant

Seldom Seen Kid might be Elbow's best overall album but I thnk this is their most interesting. Like all their albums, all the songs are of an amazingly high quality - standouts include: the title track, Mexican Standoff, Forget Myself and Great Expectations. Please don't buy individual songs, buy the whole damn album - buy all their albums right now!!!

Breathtakingly beautiful Music (capital M)

I have been listening to the track The Stops at every given moment possible today. It is the most beautiful thing I have heard for ages. I had heard it before without it registering with me, but caught it on a random play this morning and it stopped me in my tracks on my way to work today. How this band took 20 years to make it is a complete mystery. I really think they are the best thing to come out of the Uk since (dare I say it) the Beatles.Terrific tunes great original arrangements and instrumentation and a lyricist/singer that any band would die for.
"I think we dropped the baton like the sixties never happened"?
What a fantastic album!

Injecting a wider range of emotions into their music than most of their guitar-based British peers, Elbow have been known to refer to their grandiose orchestral sound as "prog without the solos." The members of the band -- vocalist Guy Garvey, drummer Richard Jupp, organist Craig Potter, guitarist Mark Potter, and bassist Pete Turner -- met during the early '90s while attending college in Bury. After moving several miles south to Manchester proper, the band went through a couple of developmental...
