Les Chants Magnetiques was the third of Jean Michel Jarre's albums in a row to update Tangerine Dream's atmospheric sequencer trance for a synth pop and mainstream crossover audience. The side-long "Les Chants Magnetiques, Pt. 1" is the capstone of the album, while "Pt. 2" through "Pt. 5" move through driving electronic pop and several passages more indebted to Jarre's past in the musique concrète scene. It's often just as melodic and inventive as Oxygene, though not as consistently creative.
Les Chants Magnetiques (literal translation Magnetic Songs) but in English, better known as Magnetic Fields ("champs" is "fields")... ok, to cut to the chase, released in 1981, this is Jean-Michel's third studio album. Described by his official biographer, Jean-Louis Remilleux as a "voyage into sonic hyper-reality", this album - supposedly inspired by Andy Warhol's prints of Marilyn Monroe - is never-the-less often compared unfavourably to Jarre's previous works, Oxygene and Equinoxe. It can be argued that the sound to Magnetic Fields lacks their depth and warmth, and this may be down to the new sampling and digital technology that was being developed in the early 80s. However, there are still some great compositions. Part 2 is the single, and although not quite as well known or remembered as Oxygene 4 or Equinoxe 5, is still a widely appreciated Jarre favourite. Part 3, on the other hand, may be for Jarre completists only, although it does feature some unusual sounds and is one of the most intriguing tracks on this album. Part 4 is one of my own personal favourite pieces that Jarre has produced, featuring a strong likeable melody, nice use of vocoder and a boppy bassline. Odd then that it hasn't been used since 1981 in any of his live concerts. Part 5 is debatable - it is a nice tune but the execution of it... well, it's more likely to appeal to grandparents than teenagers!!! Perhaps then, the saving grace of this album is the incredible Part 1, and it really is worth downloading the whole album to get this. It's JMJ's first real epic track, and certainly his most creative piece on the album, and features 3 separate movements. The first is the one that is heard the most (and a symphonic version of was released last year and is also available on iTunes), and is knocking on the door of being one of Jarre's all time classics. The second section of Part 1 is initially not particularly likeable, but over time appreciation of its depth and intricate nature will shine. But perhaps the best was saved for last with what could easily be mistaken for an instrumental by Vince Clarke - a real hidden gem on the album. It's not like Oxygene or Equinoxe, but it's still pretty damn good! Unfortunately, it has been overshadowed in musical history by these other albums, and his 1984 release, the completely sampler-driven Zoolook (which includes the magnificent Ethnicolor, an epic track like Magnetic Fields 1) - which unfortunately is not available for download on iTunes (as of May 2007).
Foundation of the best Jarre Album Ever...
...that album being the Concerts in China. The fluidity and fast pace of Magnetic Fields is like a crecsendo to the genius of Jarre's early works, from Oxygene, Equinoxe and then Magnetic Fields which all finish with the Concerts in China.
Good old itunes. There's only one song on here worth having - and it's a bonafide classic at that - so they make you fork out 7.99 for the whole album before they let you have it. Do they think we're stupid?
