Album Review

Ocean Drive, the debut album from the London-based duo Lighthouse Family, is a modest, but extremely pleasant affair that makes for excellent rainy-day listening. While some may find Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu's song stylings a little too soft rock for their taste, the smooth guitar chords and quiet percussion quickly become addictive. Not to mention the album's best tunes, "Lifted" and "Ocean Drive," are virtually guaranteed to buoy one's spirits. "Ocean Drive" is particularly transporting; if you close your eyes and let your mind wander while listening to this track, you can almost feel yourself driving along the coast, the wind in your hair and your responsibilities left behind. The other songs aren't quite on the same level, but they are still fun to listen to. "Loving Every Minute" features some great trumpet backup from "Tim Kellett," and the drums on "Keep Remembering" and "Sweetest Operator" certainly get your feet tapping. The album ends on a high note with "Goodbye Heartbreak," a song about love and loss that makes a nice bookend to the upbeat first track, "Lifted." With the exception of these two songs and "Ocean Drive," the weakest aspect of the record is the lyrics, which range from the forgettable to the inscrutable. Fortunately, lead singer Baiyewu possesses such a strong voice, you can treat it as another instrument and tune out what he is actually saying. The group's real strength is the music anyway. A great album to put on while you're reading or just sitting quietly by yourself.

This is a truly uplifting record. If you're lying in bed on a rainy Saturday morning, then put this on and 'Lifted' will take all your stresses away and at the very least, leave you with a smile on your face. A summer's evening drive by the coast is only made more perfect by 'Ocean Drive', with its beautiful lyrics, gorgeous melodies and just a simplicity that really tells you that life couldn't be better. 'Ocean Drive' has to be one of my favourite songs for cheering me up; when you listen to this you'll know why. Clever percussion is weaved throughout the album but never overshadows Tunde's beautiful voice that does the low notes like nobody else. Although the lyrics in some of the B-sides are a little dire, and never really mean to say anything special, if occasionally not even really making sense, they are easily overriden by the marvellous melodic line. It's a more accessible album than 'Postcards From Heaven', and though perhaps it may not be quite so rewarding over time, it's a fantastic album to just shut your eyes and listen to. You'll be chilled in minutes.

Lifted and Ocean Drive have got to be the theme tunes to my chilhood.

Lifted and Ocean Drive have got to be the theme tunes to my chilhood. These two songs on this brilliant album are absolutely incredible. They are songs that lift your mood up to cloud nine and I have my father to thank for getting me into Lighthouse Family

The most relaxed album there is

The vocals are amazing. The subtle tunes will let you relax and take an hour of stress out of your life. Well worth getting. I'm not sure whether it should be considered pop though. Maybe R&B; i mean the real R&B, not the modern excuse for it.

Formed: 1993 in Newcastle, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

A Northern soul duo who recorded the single "Lifted" in 1995 but had to wait two years for it to become a hit, the Lighthouse Family was formed in Newcastle by vocalist Tunde Baiyewu and programmer/keyboard player Paul Tucker. Both had been born in London, though Baiyewu lived in Nigeria for ten years before returning to attend college in the north, where he met Tucker. The duo began recording, and though Baiyewu had trepidations about his vocal abilities, they recorded the singles "Ocean Drive"...
