That A Colbert Christmas doesn't really work on its own is largely irrelevant. Colbert fandom is an all-or-nothing proposition, and those in the "all" camp will happily relive the special's musical numbers here. Others will find a mixed bag. Even without foreknowledge of his sharp cynicism, "Another Christmas Song" and "A Cold, Cold Christmas" are funny enough, but without the special's comedic pacing and narrative lead-ins, "Please Be Patient" and "Little Dealer Boy" are worthless. Functioning better on their own are ingratiatingly self-aware numbers by crooner John Legend and reactionary macho man Toby Keith. Legend's "Nutmeg," in particular, is one dumb joke played so straight the result approaches comic sublimity. Fans are advised to cherry-pick their favorite numbers and leave the rest aside, as the all-star singalongs that open the EP recall the chintzy sentimentality of the very specials the involved parties are ostensibly parodying.
Great Britain should be a Colbert Nation too!!!
We here in England don't get treated to half as much Stephen Colbert as we should. He's perhaps THE funniest man on American television, and funnier than most of the talk show hosts here in England too. That's nothing against this country, but his style of comedy is just so unique, and unless Boris Johnson decides to pack up being mayor of London and bag himself a television show too, Stephen Colbert will always be the king of political satire. This album is going to make this christmas soooooo much better, and I'm hoping that some of these tracks will make it into the anual 'Christmas Song List'. It will never be mainstream, but I can always hope. Colbert Rocks!!!
My second favorite American political satirist (right behind Jon Stewart who also makes an appearance) has come up with a great set of christmas tracks. If you can get your hands on the DVD of the special, I strongly advise it aswell!
This album truly is the greatest gift of all. People around the world have been enjoying this colbertbum every Christmas since 2008. Help feed the Colbert children and finance Stephen's retirememt. Remember, the quicker he retires with our hard earned donations, the quicker he'll get to enjoy his Texan retirement while also protecting us by protecting American (his) lawns from illegal aliens.
