iTunes Editors' Notes

Released in 1977 as a three-record set, Decade summed up Neil Young's career to that point with the same idiosyncratic approach he applied to his music. That plenty of first-rate material was left off is a testament to the man's greatness (and a signal to fans to keep buying the individual albums). It's intriguing to see what Young picks. "Heart of Gold" and "Ohio" are the surefire hits; however, "Sugar Mountain," "Down by the River," "Southern Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done," and "Like a Hurricane" all became FM radio staples. Young rescues a few classic tracks from potential obscurity, bringing his collaboration with Stephen Stills, "Long May You Run," to prominence. "Campaigner" is his olive branch to Richard Nixon. The wired intensity of "Burned" and "Cortez the Killer" meets the twisted balladry of "After the Gold Rush" and "Star of Bethlehem." His orchestrated work with Jack Nitzsche on "Broken Arrow," as a member of Buffalo Springfield, juxtaposes nicely with the country-rock jaunt of "Burned" and the raging fury of "Mr. Soul." There isn't a bum track here, and there are more than a few revelations.

Towering achievement

If any musical artist would want to leave a legacy of their work over a 10 year period- then Neil Young will die a happy man. This CD us a hugely important buy for anyone interested in the social history of America during the Vietnam War era. I hope one day he produces a CD of his entire output. When I first heard "Like a Hurricane" it was on a BBC live appearance some time in the 1990s. I would have bought this CD for that one track alone.

best of the best

This album is just incredible neil young... ROCK ON!!

Simply brilliant!

This is a superb cross-section of some of Neil's best work. There are some notable tracks which would have been worthy of inclusion, such as 'Thrasher' from 'Rust Never Sleeps' , 'Four Strong Winds' from 'Comes a Time' and 'Pochahontas' from 'Rust Never Sleeps' but that notwithstanding, it is still a brilliant album (If your not an 'album purist', why not buy the other tracks for 79p, then 'tack' them onto the end of the album by changing the 'info' section. That's what I did!!)

Biography

Born: 12 November 1945 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s through...
