Better R.E.M Albums To Buy J-PJ (A big R.E.M fan)

If I was going to guess the songs on an iTunes originals for R.E.M, I think that I would have been spot on with those included. You either love R.E.M or hate them, and if you hate them, then this album will only fuel your feelings further. Even die hard fans must be getting sick of Stipey moaning his way through losing my religion; add to this every T.V channel using Everybody Hurts everytime a death occurs and you want to punch the television or throw the radio at the wall. Even worse, the Corrs and Beth Orton murdering tracks, AHHHH! There are two really good songs on here that might make you change your mind about R.E.M - At my most beautiful, a simple statement of love and E-bow, for its pure desperation and darkness. Worth getting instead from other albums: Its the end of the world as we know it Half a world away Country feedback We Walk I believe Fall on me Daysleeper (consider the perspective of M. Foucault on this one -Power/Knowledge) Driver 8 So. Central Rain Give them a try, ignore the fact that R.E.M are a massive band; instead it might be useful to consider that Stipe is a complex character, an Army 'Brat' going against the norms of the South in both sexuality and occupation (he initially went to Art College). The R.E.M story is a little boring; they met, had a stupid name, played a party in a church, supported the Police, did OK, signed to Warner and made it huge. Oh and Bill Berry left to be a farmer - Yawn.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
