Album Review

A likeable collection that has been made obsolete by other greatest-hits and best-of Spinners packages. Only ten songs are here but six are flat-out hits and two are prime LP cuts: the melodic "We Belong Together" and the uptempo but mournful "Just Can't Get You Out of My Mind." Two new tunes complete the compilation, "Right or Wrong" and "Love Is in Season." Spinners fanatics will drool over the newbies and will add this to their collection, while casual fans, who already have most of these, will pass.

The Spinners were the greatest soul group of the early '70s, creating a body of work that defined the lush, seductive sound of Philly soul. Ironically, the band's roots lay in Detroit, where they formed as a doo wop group during the late '50s. Throughout the '60s, the Spinners tried to land a hit by adapting to the shifting fashions of R&B and pop.
