Album Review

Although their songs imply otherwise, the Hailey brothers had extensive careers in gospel before turning to secular music. The wails, shouts, and yells that accompany most of their hits reaffirm that tradition, and it's clearly audible often on their latest Uptown entry. Again they employ a running storyline/theme through the disc, this time incorporating audio vignettes about life on and off stage during a concert that are interspersed through the disc and help pad things out through what is a poorly edited and sequenced CD. Unlike many other urban and R&B groups, Jodeci doesn't really produce its material with singles in mind; there's not really one song here that works as a separate entity, even though several stations are playing edited cuts. Ironically, their refusal to emphasize radio hits, which in most cases would be deemed a sage creative ploy, frequently works against Jodeci. They let ballads drone on, up-tempo tunes end awkwardly, and extend sections until they lose their impact. However Jodeci's earnestness and enthusiasm often helps them overcome cliched lyrics and melodramatic vocals, and there are enough good moments sprinkled throughout this disc to make it worthwhile for most urban contemporary listeners.

All i can say is that there is never gonna be another jodeci! All of their albumz have been top!

NEver underestimate the power of true soul

I agree in part with the write up, but groups like Jodeci, Blackstreet and Soul for Real had a clear defined audience - the ladies and the couples wanting to put on something and enjoy the night. There are 2 songs which clearly cut through all this and when played on air on in club instantly get your head nodding and singing along and they are Freek 'n You and Love U 4 Life. I used to get ready to go out to their first album, and when I got home , used to sit back and enjoy the other 2 with my girlfriend.

I agree with the others jodeci was a top rnb group. Both me and my now wife loved this album and we chose love u 4 life as our song, and we danced to it on our wedding day.

Genre: R&B/Soul

If Boyz II Men were portrayed as a clean-cut, wholesome R&B vocal group, then Jodeci's wild, sexual, bad-boy image represented the other side of the coin. Made up of two sets of brothers, the group's name was a consolidation of its members' names: Joel "JoJo" Hailey, Donald "DeVante Swing" and Dalvin DeGrate, and Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey. Natives of Charlotte, North Carolina, all four members toured the South as young boys singing gospel music, and even recorded albums. Both families belonged to the...
