Album Review

Luther's Blues is where Luther Allison began to come into his own, developing a fluid, gutsy style full of soulful string bending. There are still a few weak spots, but the album remains an effective slice of contemporary Chicago blues.

Hard To Find Gordy Label Album From 1974 Given A Superb Remaster

"Luther's Blues" was issued July 1974 in the USA on Motown's Gordy G 967 (Tracks 1 to 9). "San-Ho-Zay" and "Bloomington Closing" are previously unreleased outtakes from the session while the 19-minute live medley that is Track 19 is also previously unreleased - recorded at the Arbor Blues Festival in 1973. This CD is part of Universal's 2001 "Blues Classics - Remastered & Revisited" series (a secondary title beneath the see-through tray) and has been remastered to fantastic quality by SUHA GUR - one of Universal's top tape engineers. The sound quality on all of the tracks is pumping, muscular and superbly clear. Half of the tracks are straight up blues like his own "Let's Have A Little Talk" where Allison sounds like a grittier version of B.B. King with the brass section of Blood, Sweat & Tears backing him up. But then there are very soulful songs too. Check out the funky-as-f**k "Now You Got It" - it's also a good track to hear how good the remaster is. A very hard-to-find vinyl album for Motown collectors and blues enthusiasts - recommended.
