bottom of the barrel not quite reached yet

Do you remember when singles were 7", round, vinyl and had a b-side that showed you where a group was going or where it had been exploring? U2's b-sides used to be glorious, "Trash, Trampoline", "Things to Make and Do", "Sweetest Thing", "Three Sunrises", "Bass trap"... Sometimes just really interesing cover versions, "Paint it Black", "Everlasting Love", "Fortunate Son". Real jewels such as their own versions of songs written for others. But then why throw away such trinkets when you can save them up to puff out future re-releases of old albums. Do we really need six versions of Magnificent? Do we really need other remixes of the previous single? Boots failed to set the world alight, it was the wrong track, over-marketed and Magnifcent, a decent song in itself, might as well have been strangled at birth with this death by remix over-kill! Don't buy it... it just encourages them. When other bands are stirring things up through free cds in papers, free live albums, remix your own versions, U2 fall back upon lazy idle give it to a DJ and stick a click-track on it. Don't buy it - bury it instead!

The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional, the rhythm section of Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton played the songs...
