About François-Xavier Roth

François-Xavier Roth is a French conductor whose extensive repertoire ranges from the 17th century to the 21st. In his youth he learned music from his father, organist Daniel Roth. A graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, he studied flute with Alain Marion and conducting with Jànos Fürst. He won the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in 2000, and was subsequently awarded a two-year appointment as assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He is best known for his work with the period ensemble, Les Siècles, which he organized in 2003 to play repertoire from the Baroque to the modern era on original instruments, of which the orchestra possesses a large collection. Roth has also conducted conventional orchestras with modern instrumentation, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège. As of 2010, he has been the principal conductor of the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, with whom he has recorded a series of Richard Strauss' tone poems on Hänssler.
