Nostalg-tastic

One of the best action movies ever made, and one of the truly good Hollywood blockbusters to come of the 1990's had this equally pulse-pounding score to go with it. Mark Mancina, one of Hans Zimmers' proteges, isn't one of cinema's better-known composers, but his occassional work-especially his rollicking score for director Jan de Bont's sophomore "Twister"-has always been worth investigation. What makes this score memorable isn't just how exciting it is as a listen (even if the electronics do sound dated now) but how he uses the Goldsmith trick of developing a main theme and then incoporating it in different ways to suit the pacing and mood of the film. All the tracks feel as if they belong together, but they don't sound repetitive. In the same way the movie takes the concept of a bomb on a bus and stretches and twists it into a relentless, immediate, thrilling action film, so the score feels like a cohesive but varied and exciting work. The only real criticism one can take is that some of the shorter tracks feel like padding here, but the highlights really are worth pursuing.
