Album Review

For those who don't remember who Bucks Fizz were, they were the British winners of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, before Eastern Europe took over the contest and appeared to shut out all other nations. This was still a time when mixed boy/girl groups were in vogue in the contest, Brotherhood of Man, Teach In, Milk & Honey, and of course ABBA, all having won the annual show in the previous seven years. Bucks Fizz, like ABBA before them, launched their career appearing in front of millions of European viewers and, also reflected the success of ABBA, they continued on after the initial furor of the show had died away, achieving three number one singles in total, "Making Your Mind Up," "The Land of Make Believe," and "My Camera Never Lies." Much more of a singles band than album-oriented, they did in fact have 20 hit singles between 1981 and 1988, seven of them reaching the Top Ten, yet they had only ever spent one week in the album chart Top Ten with their second album, Are You Ready. Even their hits compilations had not performed as successfully as one might have thought they should: their original Greatest Hits in 1983, a 12-track album, peaked at a miserable number 25, and their first major collection in the CD era, The Best of Bucks Fizz in 1994, failed to chart at all, as did a double-CD, The Ultimate Anthology in 2005, with 32 tracks, over a quarter of them dance and extended remixes. So here was a chance to set the record straight and put together a compilation of hits of one of the successful fun pop bands of the '80s. The Very Best of Bucks Fizz contained 18 tracks, running roughly chronologically and missing only "Rules of the Game" and "Magical" from a complete list of all of their hits. If this album didn't sell, Bucks Fizz would probably never sell a full-length album. It didn't, which just goes to prove the adage that some bands, especially fluffy pop ones, should stick to singles.

Sweet and Fizzy

Bucks Fizz do get a bit of a rough deal.. They're always lumped into the naff Eurovision catagory, when in truth, they were much more than that. There's no way they can be put up there with ABBA but then they can't be put down with the likes of Brotherhood of Man and Sonia either. Bucks Fizz had a long line of hits ,moving away from Eurovision and becoming just a good, solid POP band. They were all brought together to do the U.K song (Making Your mind Up) on the day, they were all good singers (well, Jay was o.k!!) and they had a fantastic writing and producing team behind them in Andy Hill and Pete Sinfield. Witness the tracks here.. they are all firm staples of the 80's.. LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE, MY CAMERA NEVER LIES, NOW THOSE DAYS ARE GONE ,I HEAR TALK and HEART OF STONE ( later covered by CHER) are all solid pop songs and stand up really well. B.F tried to move away into soft rock later and even these tracks seemed to have improved with age.. Bizarrely NEW BEGINNING isn't on this set, which is a shame.. but all in all, this is a great reminder of a good group. While not quite vintage Champagne, Bucks Fizz have certainly matured and got better with time.

Missing a track

Where is "New Beginning"? This is featured as track 14 on the physical album which also comes with a DVD of the videos for a couple of pounds more. Come on get it right...

Wonderful music - just bad packaging

Why can't Sony/BMG just get it right?...... A wonderful group and music - this could be a wonderful thing. The packaging is shameful - the DVD version is very badly put together too. Here is hoping for better next time. Five stars only because I love BF...... One star for Sony/BMG!!!!

The winners of the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, British quartet Bucks Fizz were, throughout the early '80s, regarded among the most successful bands of their era, chalking up no less than nine Top 20 hits between 1981-1983, including three chart-toppers, "Making Your Mind Up" (their Eurovision winner), "The Land of Make Believe," and "My Camera Never Lies." The band's total chart record includes 20 Top 40 entries, and it was 1988 before Bucks Fizz finally stopped scoring hits — not a bad record...
