Probably the best Hymn of Praise

By common consent there are several recommendable modern recordings of this symphony from Abbado, Karajan (now sounding a little old), Ashkenazy, and Dohnanyi, but there is none finer than this classic Leipzig version, with Peter Schreier as the classic tenor soloist. The work has an unusual format with three purely orchestral movement lasting 20 minutes, followed by a cantata lasting 40. Masur conducts with great urgency, the playing, singing, and recording are excellent, and it's worth noting this is the cheapest version as well.

Barbara Bonney is one of her generation's most versatile singers, having achieved equal success with lied, oratorio, modern vocal music, and opera, and on top of all that having become a highly proficient cellist. Her smallish but well-projected voice is especially suited to Mozart, the lighter Richard Strauss operas, and all but the heaviest lieder, and she has been careful in her choice of repertoire; even in her fortiess, she can still call forth a fresh, girlish timbre when it is needed.
